Working with Trauma-Impacted Couples in EFT

EFT Massachusetts

Guiding Couples through Attachment Injuries, Loss and Trauma into Growth and Resilience with Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)

Navigating the potential impacts of attachment injuries, loss and trauma can be overwhelming for therapists and clients alike. Attachment theory and science provide the map, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) offers a method. Informed by more than 30 years of attachment science research and clinical experience, EFT gets to the heart of the matter. That is, the core elements of attachment that can either impact clients’ capacity to move into and through emotion toward resilience, or somewhere along a continuum characterized by recurring patterns of distress.

This training will provide you with the understanding and skills to join clients on their unique journeys through loss and trauma into growth and resilience. Deepening your capacity to harness the power and potency of emotion and the healing power of relationships in couple therapy will help you feel more competent and confident, and your clients more connected and complete!

In this workshop, using real-life video case examples and other stories from the therapist’s chair, along with didactic instruction and skills building, you’ll learn how to harness the power of emotion and the wisdom of attachment science to:

  • Adopt an attachment frame for understanding health and resilience, how clients get stuck in the face of loss and trauma, and how they find their way home

  • Join with clients with CARE (i.e., attention to four key dimensions, context, attachment, relationship/therapeutic alliance, emotion) at therapy outset and throughout the therapy process

  • Create a ‘safe haven alliance’ and conduct an attachment-based experiential assessment to guide the therapy process

  • Deepen your skills in working with emotion with attention to pacing, focus and momentum

·         Outline and apply the steps of the Attachment Injury Resolution/Repair Model (AIRM)

  • Track the impacts of shame and loss in resolving attachment injuries and learn how and when to address them

·         Integrate corrective emotional experiences into models of self and other

·         Discern markers for next steps in helping couples resolve attachment injuries

·         Summarize basic tenets for how to work with Attachment Injuries across the three stages of EFCT

·         Apply and adapt AIRM to work with clients in resolving attachment injuries

  • Identify any blocks to moving with and through emotion (i.e., effective affect regulation), and implement the five moves of the EFT Tango to dissolve blocks and shape corrective emotional experiences

  • Guide clients in integrating new meaningful emotional and relational experiences to shift and update models of self and other

  • Help clients consolidate, integrate, and celebrate gains and growth, live fully and love bravely in the present, and prepare for the future

EFIT Essentials Toronto

The Toronto Centre for EFT; Toronto, Ontario

Central YMCA, 20 Grosvenor Street, Toronto

EFIT is an attachment science-based approach to individual therapy that, like the other EFT interventions, offers an integration of humanistic experiential interventions focused on reshaping intrapsychic experience and systemic interventions focused on reshaping patterns of engagement with significant others. Emotion is given precedence because of its powerful role in structuring inner experience, motivation, and key interactional patterns in relationships. Emotion links and organizes core experience and interaction.

Emotion moves people. Understanding the intuition of emotion and how to use it to create potent and sustainable change moves both the client and therapist. Sessions become more focused and effective. Corrective emotional experiences transform, shift perspectives, shift thoughts about self, about trust, confidence and competence. It is an organic process: when emotions are tapped into and used effectively, a shift in thoughts naturally follows.

Emotion is a reliable guide post, and the destination is clear: secure attachment. The lens of attachment helps us to see and understand individuals in context. EFT provides us with the tools, a roadmap, to help each individual achieve a secure connection with themselves and their most important relationships.

Goals:

  • To offer corrective experiences that positively impact models of self and other and shape stable, lasting change.

  • To offer transformative moments where vulnerability is encountered with balance.

  • To enable clients to move into the accessibility/openness, responsiveness and full engagement that characterizes secure attachment with others.

  • To enable clients to shape a coherent sense of a competent self that can deal with existential life issues and become a fully alive human being.

  • To help clients overcome stuckness and unlock their natural growth potential.

An Introduction to Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) as Applied to Trauma

Online, Raha Foundation

Attachment science offers a non-pathologizing approach to understanding clients’

distress, and Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) offers a method for addressing

it. When viewed through an attachment lens, the most complex of clinical pictures can be

simplified, allowing both therapist and client to get to the ‘heart of the matter.’ In this

session, using real client material, Dr. Leanne Campbell will offer clinical demonstration

and commentary and a tried-and-true set of five interventions to create predictable,

repeatable and lasting transformation for your clients. You and your clients are sure to be

moved!

This presentation offers a framework and a method for moving clients beyond symptom

resolution into ongoing growth and resilience, that is, secure attachment, a platform upon

which clients can continue to grow in their most important relationships. Studies indicate

that secure attachment is associated with a variety of positive health indices. EFIT offers an

approach to move clients from insecure attachment into a felt sense of security, typified by

the capacity to tune into internal experience (e.g., fears, needs, longings, vulnerability),

share that coherently and directly with key others, and give and receive love.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) Externship

ICE EFT Online
Co-presenter: Dr. Kurt Wical

Overview

An Externship in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy® is an immersive four-day (24+ hour) training experience, foundational for therapists aiming to specialize in EFCT. Led by certified trainers, it offers a comprehensive introduction to the EFCT model, focusing on the science of attachment and the systematic approach to couple therapy. This training is crucial for therapists because it equips them with the necessary skills to foster secure, resilient relationships in therapy. It’s the first step in formal EFCT training, opening the door to advanced practice and certification, enhancing therapists’ efficacy and confidence in their clinical work with couples.

What will I learn in an “Externship”?

  • Participants will obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an “Emotionally Focused” approach to therapy.

  • Participants will be able to view clients in the web of their interpersonal attachments and conceptualize relationship distress and repair based on theories of attachment and emotion.

  • EFT is a relational therapy. The Externship will focus on the model of EFCT laid out in the 2019 book, Attachment Theory in Practice, and teach the model as implemented in couple therapy sessions.

  • Participants will develop skills in sharing and maintaining an engaged, open and collaborative alliance with clients.

  • Participants will develop skills in the 5 moves of the basic macro-intervention – the EFT Tango – in order to change patterns of affect regulation, models of self and other, strategies for engaging others and interactional patterns.

  • Participants will develop skills in EFT micro interventions taken from experiential and attachment systemic models of intervention.

  • Participants will develop skills in overcoming common blocks and impasses in couple therapy and so shape core corrective emotional experiences that lead to constructive dependency and what Rogers termed ‘existential living.’
